Movimiento Estudiantil Chican@ de Aztlan de California State University of Monterey Bay (M.E.Ch.A. de CSUMB) is a student activist organization that joins together diverse students of different background and ethnicities to collectively move towards social, political, and economic justice for ourselves, our people, and our communities.

MEChA is committed to ending the cultural tyranny suffered at the hands of institutional and systematic discrimination that holds our Gente captive. We seek an end to oppression and exploitation of the Chicano/Chicana community.” – M.E.Ch.A. Philosophy

On Tuesday, May 20th, Carlos Mejia, age 44 was shot in the face and chest and was killed by police. In the recent video that went viral, you can see that two armed officers of Salinas Police Department had followed Mejia, who was carrying garden shears, and shot him as he is seen walking away from the officers.

This shooting is not an isolated incident, but is one of three fatal shootings that occurred in the streets of Salinas, California within 90 days. When a community is constantly exposed to the unmerciful killings of civilians by police officers, an element of fear and outrage falls among the community.

M.E.Ch.A. de CSUMB stands in solidarity with the city of Salinas in their fight against police brutally! We stand in solidarity with the community against unjustified and unmerciful killings of our community members. We stand in solidarity with Salinas to put a stop to the abuse of authority by SPD and we stand with those who are speaking up and joining forces to put an end to the police patrolling within communities of color.

Our condolences go out to the friends, family, and community of Salinas, Ca who have lost their loved ones to police shootings.

In solidarity y en la lucha,

M.E.Ch.A. de CSUMB
